Windows Server / File Services, Storage & Backup
Check shadow-copy storage allocation during backup failures
Snapshot creation can fail when its configured storage limit or underlying volume lacks capacity. Inspect allocation separately from ordinary free space.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
vssadmin list shadowstorage
Read the result
The Windows command reports associations and used, allocated and maximum shadow-copy storage. Limits and actual device capacity are different constraints.
Resolve and verify
Match the failing source volume and inspect growth during the backup window. Plan supported capacity or retention changes and retest the application-aware backup.
Before changing production
Do not delete all shadow copies or reduce their limit without checking restore and user recovery requirements.
