Windows Server / File Services, Storage & Backup
Investigate a Windows data disk unexpectedly offline
A storage device can be detected but unavailable because of policy, collision or underlying faults. Inspect its identity and status before bringing it online.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Get-Disk | Select-Object Number, FriendlyName, SerialNumber, OperationalStatus, HealthStatus, IsOffline, IsReadOnly
Read the result
The output identifies disks visible to the storage stack. An offline state is not permission to attach a shared or replicated disk for writes.
Resolve and verify
Compare disk identity with the storage inventory, cluster ownership and recent changes. Correct the specific condition through the storage owner's supported procedure.
Before changing production
Do not initialize, clear or online an unfamiliar disk; it may contain live clustered or recovery data.
