Windows Server / File Services, Storage & Backup
Check partition layout before extending a Windows data volume
A larger virtual disk does not automatically mean the intended filesystem can extend into its new space. Inspect the actual disk layout.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Get-Partition -DiskNumber 2 | Select-Object PartitionNumber, DriveLetter, Offset, Size, Type
Read the result
Replace the disk number with the verified target. The layout helps identify neighboring partitions; it does not establish a supported maximum filesystem size.
Resolve and verify
Confirm the disk's identity, backup and application requirements, then use the documented extension procedure for the filesystem and storage type.
Before changing production
Do not delete an intervening recovery or system partition to make an extension command succeed without a separate reviewed plan.
