Investigate a local reverse proxy failing to reach a Unix socket
A backend can use a Unix-domain socket rather than a TCP port. Socket path, ownership and namespace visibility can block the proxy.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
ss -xlpn
Read the result
With the necessary access, this lists listening Unix sockets and visible process ownership. It does not calculate whether the proxy's account can traverse every directory.
Resolve and verify
Match the configured proxy path to the live socket and service identity. Repair the exact path, permissions or lifecycle dependency and validate an approved request.
Before changing production
Do not make socket directories world-writable or replace a socket file manually while the backend is running.
