Find the active NetworkManager profile before editing server networking
A host can have several saved connection profiles while only one controls its live interface. Identify the active profile first.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
nmcli -f NAME,UUID,TYPE,DEVICE connection show --active
Read the result
On a NetworkManager-managed server, this lists active profiles and devices. It does not describe networkd or independently configured container interfaces.
Resolve and verify
Compare the selected profile with the intended NIC, address and route. Make a narrowly reviewed change through the actual network manager and validate with console fallback ready.
Before changing production
Do not edit a stale profile or restart all networking over the server's only management connection.
