Correlate Linux interface error counters with a server network incident
Packet loss can originate from a physical or virtual NIC path, but cumulative counters alone do not reveal when errors occurred.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
ip -s link show dev ens3
Read the result
The output includes RX and TX counters for the selected interface. Counter meaning can vary with driver and platform, so compare timed deltas.
Resolve and verify
Collect short interval samples during the symptom and correlate switch or hypervisor evidence. Repair the demonstrated cable, driver, queue or host-path issue.
Before changing production
Do not reset counters before preserving a baseline or conclude that any historical error proves the current outage cause.
