Linux Server / Filesystems, LVM & Recovery
Map Linux block devices to filesystems before changing storage
Cloud and SAN device names can change after reboot or attachment. Identify the intended device through its filesystem and stable identifiers.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
lsblk -o NAME,TYPE,SIZE,FSTYPE,UUID,MOUNTPOINTS
Read the result
On a recent util-linux installation, this displays the visible block topology and mount associations. Older versions may need a supported column alternative.
Resolve and verify
Compare stable IDs with the approved volume inventory and application path. Resolve mapping uncertainty before extending, formatting or recovering any device.
Before changing production
Do not identify a production disk solely by an assumed /dev/sdX name or initialize an unfamiliar device.
