Linux Server / Filesystems, LVM & Recovery
Investigate a Linux data filesystem remounted read-only
A read-only path can be an intentional mount option or a protective response to storage or filesystem errors. Collect mount and kernel evidence first.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
findmnt -no SOURCE,FSTYPE,OPTIONS --target /srv/data
Read the result
The result identifies the filesystem backing the example path and its current options. It does not explain why a read-only state was selected.
Resolve and verify
Correlate kernel errors, storage health and recent maintenance. Stabilize the device and follow the filesystem's supported offline recovery procedure when required.
Before changing production
Do not blindly remount read-write over repeated I/O errors or attempt online repair with an offline-only tool.
