Linux Server / Filesystems, LVM & Recovery
Diagnose a stale UUID in a server's fstab
A restored or replaced volume can leave a boot-time mount referring to an identifier that no longer exists.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
blkid
findmnt --verify --verbose
Read the result
With suitable device access, blkid shows recognized filesystem IDs and findmnt validates configured mount intent. Neither command repairs missing data or proves the replacement is the right volume.
Resolve and verify
Compare the expected source with the actual recovered storage and backup inventory. Correct only the verified mapping and test through the approved recovery plan.
Before changing production
Do not substitute the first available device or let applications write into an unmounted data directory.
