Linux Server / Filesystems, LVM & Recovery
Check LVM volume-group free extents before extending a filesystem
A logical volume can be full while its volume group still has spare extents, or the group may have no allocatable capacity.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
vgs -o vg_name,vg_size,vg_free,pv_count
Read the result
With authorized LVM metadata access, this reports group capacity and physical-volume count. Filesystem free space and thin-pool availability are separate layers.
Resolve and verify
Map the application filesystem to its logical volume and compare group headroom with the approved growth plan. Extend only through the supported LVM and filesystem sequence.
Before changing production
Do not add an unidentified disk to a volume group or assume a larger LV automatically grows every filesystem.
