Investigate source-specific Linux routing on a multihomed server
A route in the main table can look correct while a policy rule sends the application's traffic elsewhere. Inspect rules and all relevant tables.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
ip rule show
ip route show table all
Read the result
The rules determine which table is consulted, while table entries describe possible paths. Network namespaces and the actual source address also affect selection.
Resolve and verify
Compare a targeted route lookup for the application's source and destination with the intended management, backup and data networks. Correct only the verified managed policy.
Before changing production
Do not delete policy rules or replace the default gateway during an unprotected remote session.
