Linux Server / Filesystems, LVM & Recovery
Monitor LVM thin-pool data and metadata independently
A thin logical volume can advertise capacity while its shared pool runs out of data or metadata space. Inspect both percentages.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
lvs -a -o lv_name,vg_name,lv_attr,lv_size,data_percent,metadata_percent
Read the result
The LVM report describes thin pools and related volumes where those fields apply. A blank value for another LV type is normal.
Resolve and verify
Compare trend and monitoring thresholds with physical group capacity. Arrange supported pool growth or workload cleanup before exhaustion and verify recovery behavior.
Before changing production
Do not delete thin volumes or overprovision further based solely on their apparent virtual sizes.
