A drive can be online while it is not ready to produce torque because of mode, fault or enable prerequisites.

Observe and record
Record the drive's documented status word, active operating mode, fault state and PLC request or acknowledgment tags without sending commands.
Interpret the evidence
Network reachability is not motion permission. Ready, enabled, moving and faulted states have different meanings that depend on the drive family.
Resolve and verify
Trace the first unmet approved prerequisite, repair the demonstrated cause and validate through the machine's authorized motion procedure.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not force enable bits, bypass safe-torque-off or command movement just to confirm the connection.
