Oracle Database / Operations & Incident Response
Locate the current Oracle session's trace file before enabling tracing
A targeted trace is easier to manage than database-wide tracing. Identify the diagnostic location and agree on collection scope first.
Environment and inputs: Oracle Database 19c baseline · SQL*Plus-compatible SQL unless RMAN, DGMGRL, ADRCI or a host shell is specified. Check release, patch level, edition and container first.
Start with this diagnostic
Use the stated SQL, RMAN, DGMGRL or host shell and replace sample names with approved targets. DBA and V$ views need authorized catalog access in the correct container. Do not grant broad privileges for an example.
SELECT name, value FROM v$diag_info WHERE name IN ('Default Trace File','Diag Trace');
Read the result
Default Trace File identifies this session's trace destination, not the failing application's trace. Another session must be mapped explicitly.
Resolve and verify
Use an approved bounded trace for the actual session only when necessary, then disable collection and analyze the sanitized output. Confirm available disk capacity beforehand.
Operational precautions
Tracing can add overhead and record bind data. Do not enable broad tracing or collect sensitive values without an approved need.
