ORA-00942: distinguish a missing object from missing access
A table-not-found error can mean a wrong schema, wrong PDB, invalid synonym or insufficient privileges. Confirm the session target before requesting grants.
Environment and inputs: Oracle Database 19c baseline · SQL*Plus-compatible SQL unless RMAN, DGMGRL, ADRCI or a host shell is specified. Check release, patch level, edition and container first.
Start with this diagnostic
Use the stated SQL, RMAN, DGMGRL or host shell and replace sample names with approved targets. DBA and V$ views need authorized catalog access in the correct container. Do not grant broad privileges for an example.
SELECT owner, object_name, object_type FROM all_objects WHERE object_name = 'APP_ORDERS';
Read the result
ALL_OBJECTS lists objects visible to this account, not every object in the database. No row cannot distinguish nonexistence from invisibility.
Resolve and verify
Check the intended owner and schema-qualified name. Have the owner verify existence and grant the smallest required access through the approved process.
Operational precautions
Use the actual object name and case. Avoid broad SELECT ANY TABLE grants as a repair.
