Docker / Engine, Containers & Runtime Diagnosis
Correlate Docker restart count with the actual container identity
An operator can mistake a newly created container for the one that failed earlier. Capture ID, timestamps and restart count together.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker container inspect --format '{{.Id}} {{.Created}} {{.RestartCount}} {{.State.StartedAt}} {{.State.FinishedAt}}' app
Read the result
These fields describe this container instance and recorded lifecycle. A replacement with the same name has a different identity and can reset the apparent history.
Resolve and verify
Match the ID with deployment and daemon events, then inspect the relevant application logs. Preserve identity in the support record before an approved replacement.
Before changing production
Do not conclude a leak or crash vanished solely because recreating the container reset its counters.
