Docker / Engine, Containers & Runtime Diagnosis
Find a stopped Docker container before recreating its name
Default running-container output can hide an exited instance that still owns its name and writable layer. Inspect all relevant states.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker container ls -a --filter name=app
Read the result
The name filter can match more than one container, so verify exact name and ID. An exited container may still hold useful logs and configuration.
Resolve and verify
Compare state and creation time with the intended deployment, then inspect the original failure and data mounts. Reuse or replace only through the reviewed application workflow.
Before changing production
Do not remove a stopped container before checking for unrecovered writable-layer data and incident evidence.
