Docker / Engine, Containers & Runtime Diagnosis
Distinguish Docker Desktop's VM environment from the physical host
Desktop containers can run inside a managed VM, so host paths, resource limits and network behavior differ from a native Linux Engine.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker context ls
docker info --format '{{.OperatingSystem}}'
Read the result
The selected endpoint and reported operating system identify part of the execution context. They do not prove that every visible host directory is shared into the VM.
Resolve and verify
Compare the actual Docker Desktop backend, file-sharing configuration and VM resources with the workload requirements. Diagnose at the correct host, VM or container layer.
Before changing production
Do not edit internal VM storage or use native-Linux cleanup procedures blindly on a Desktop-managed installation.
