Docker / Engine, Containers & Runtime Diagnosis
Check client and daemon compatibility before blaming an application
A newer CLI against an older Engine can negotiate differently or reject some features. Record both sides of the actual endpoint.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker version
Read the result
Client and Server fields identify reported versions and API context when communication succeeds. Compose and Buildx have separate versions.
Resolve and verify
Compare the required command or feature with supported Engine and API behavior. Upgrade through the host owner's supported path and validate representative workloads.
Before changing production
Do not force arbitrary API versions or replace production binaries without considering runtime and storage compatibility.
