Docker / Engine, Containers & Runtime Diagnosis
Investigate a Docker daemon connection failure by layer
Cannot connect can mean a stopped daemon, wrong socket, inaccessible remote endpoint or wrong client context. Capture the actual endpoint error.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker version
Read the result
The command can report client details even when server communication fails. A missing server section does not by itself prove the intended daemon is stopped.
Resolve and verify
Verify context and approved environment overrides, then inspect the host's service or remote transport through its normal management path. Repair the specific dependency and retest.
Before changing production
Do not start a second daemon on an improvised data root or expose an unauthenticated TCP socket.
