Detailed practical guide

Prepare your workspace and inputs

Obtain the intended context name and daemon endpoint from the host owner. The example uses team-lab. No container creation, restart or deletion is needed.

Platform context: Docker CLI connected to a permitted local or test daemon. Bash examples; Docker context subcommands are also available from supported Windows shells.

Scenario to reproduce or investigate

A workstation has both a local Docker Engine and a remote daemon. The same container name can exist on both, and DOCKER_CONTEXT or DOCKER_HOST can alter the effective target.

Evidence to record in your worksheet
  • Actual target and platform release
  • Exact inputs or substituted values
  • Baseline result
  • Per-step expected and observed output
  • Failure encountered and corrective action
  • Final acceptance and recovery state
  1. Identify overrides before trusting a default label

In Bash, inspect the active context and whether the two endpoint-selection environment variables are set. A context selected through DOCKER_CONTEXT can override the configured default. Keep credential files out of the record; an endpoint label alone is not proof of ownership.

    Command, configuration or input

    docker context show
    docker context ls
    printenv DOCKER_CONTEXT
    printenv DOCKER_HOST
    Expected result · ผลที่ควรเห็น

You can explain which context or endpoint the current shell selects. printenv may exit 1 when a variable is unset; that alone is not a Docker failure.

    If it fails · เมื่อไม่ผ่าน

If the endpoint differs from the approved host, stop before workload commands. Check shell initialization and automation environment instead of switching the global context immediately.

  2. Inspect the approved endpoint and daemon identity

Use the named context for both inspection and a daemon read. Compare the endpoint, daemon name and server version with the approved inventory. The Go template prints only three daemon fields rather than dumping the full configuration.

    Command, configuration or input

    docker context inspect team-lab
    docker --context team-lab info --format '{{.Name}} | {{.ServerVersion}} | {{.OSType}}'
    Expected result · ผลที่ควรเห็น

The named context points to the approved daemon and the info call reports its name, version and OS type.

    If it fails · เมื่อไม่ผ่าน

A permission-denied error at a Unix socket needs the authorized local access method; do not chmod the socket to allow everyone. A TLS failure needs the approved endpoint and client trust configuration.

  3. List only the verified daemon and preserve the current default

Run a bounded container listing against team-lab and then check the default context again. The --context flag scopes an individual command, unlike docker context use, which changes shared client configuration.

    Command, configuration or input

    docker --context team-lab ps --format '{{.ID}}	{{.Names}}	{{.Status}}'
    docker context show
    Expected result · ผลที่ควรเห็น

The listing comes from team-lab and the final current-context is the same as before the exercise.

    If it fails · เมื่อไม่ผ่าน

If no containers appear, check whether stopped containers are relevant with docker --context team-lab ps -a; do not assume the daemon is wrong just because the running list is empty.

Check the result before marking this passed

The endpoint and daemon identity match inventory, every workload command names the approved context, and no persistent context selection or container state is changed.

Record the observed result and evidence location in the downloaded worksheet. Mark unresolved or untested conditions explicitly.

Recovery and cleanup

No daemon changes require rollback. If a global context was changed accidentally, first record its previous value and coordinate with users of that Docker configuration before restoring it.

Apply to actual work and known limits

Add an explicit context or managed endpoint selection to deployment and support scripts. A verified daemon endpoint is a prerequisite for a later operation, not authorization to perform that operation.

Authored against the cited documentation. Execution on the stated vendor product or physical equipment remains to be verified.

Background, explanations and original notes

Problem

A working Docker CLI can target a remote daemon rather than the local host. Establish the endpoint before interpreting its container list.

Start with this check

Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.

docker context show
docker context ls

Read the result

The selected context and available endpoints describe client routing. Environment overrides and command flags can also influence the actual target.

Resolve and verify

Compare the endpoint with the approved host inventory and incident scope. Use the verified context consistently and record it in the support handoff.

Before changing production

Do not switch another operator's context or share credential-bearing context material publicly.
