Inspect Windows adapter status with Get-NetAdapter

A docking station or VPN can introduce several interfaces. Identify the real adapter and its link state before blaming a DNS or routing problem.

Compiled for Sorlavit Kim · Published · Updated · 1 min read

Environment and inputs: Windows 11 · Command Prompt unless PowerShell is specified

Try the diagnostic command

Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.

Get-NetAdapter | Select-Object Name, InterfaceDescription, Status, LinkSpeed

How to read the result

Status describes the adapter state and LinkSpeed reports the negotiated link where available. Neither field guarantees usable throughput or correct IP configuration.

What to do next

Map the adapter to the cable, dock or wireless connection in use. Follow with IP configuration checks and compare a known working cable or port if the link is down.

Before you make a change

A virtual adapter can remain up even when its underlying path is unavailable. Do not disable adapters during a remote support session without another access path.
