Verify a downloaded installer with Get-FileHash

A damaged download can look like an installer defect. A cryptographic checksum helps verify that the local file matches the publisher's published artifact.

Compiled for Sorlavit Kim · Published · Updated · 1 min read

Environment and inputs: Windows 11 · Command Prompt unless PowerShell is specified

Try the diagnostic command

Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.

Get-FileHash -LiteralPath 'C:\Support\installer.msi' -Algorithm SHA256

How to read the result

The output includes the algorithm and hexadecimal digest. A match is useful only when the reference hash was obtained from a trustworthy publisher channel.

What to do next

Replace the path, obtain the expected SHA-256 value independently, and compare the entire digest. If it differs, stop installation and download the correct artifact again.

Before you make a change

A matching hash proves equality with the reference file, not that the program is safe or approved for the organization.
