Windows Server / File Services, Storage & Backup
Identify an SMB file handle before resolving a locked document
A document may be locked by a legitimate editor, background process or abandoned connection. Identify the server-side handle and owner first.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Get-SmbOpenFile | Select-Object FileId, ClientComputerName, ClientUserName, Path
Read the result
With authorized server administration access, the query lists visible open SMB files. A handle's existence does not establish that the user has abandoned it.
Resolve and verify
Match the exact path and contact the owner, then prefer a normal application close. Use a targeted forced close only when approved and after assessing unsaved work.
Before changing production
Do not close every SMB handle or restart the file service to release one document.
