Check SMB encryption policy without weakening data protection
A legacy client or CPU-bound workload can expose a compatibility or performance issue around SMB security. Inspect the share's requirement first.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Get-SmbShare -Name 'Department' | Select-Object Name, EncryptData
Get-SmbServerConfiguration | Select-Object EncryptData, RejectUnencryptedAccess
Read the result
These queries show share and server configuration, not every negotiated session property. Client capabilities and managed policy also matter.
Resolve and verify
Compare the approved security requirement with the actual client and workload. Prefer supported client updates or capacity correction and validate the intended encrypted flow.
Before changing production
Do not disable encryption or accept unencrypted access merely to improve a benchmark.
