Windows Server / File Services, Storage & Backup
Verify SMB multichannel paths during a throughput investigation
Multiple NICs do not guarantee that an SMB flow uses multiple useful paths. Inspect the negotiated client connections.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Get-SmbMultichannelConnection
Read the result
Run on the relevant SMB client context, such as a server accessing another file server. The output reports selected multichannel interfaces when supported and active.
Resolve and verify
Compare selected paths, interface capabilities and storage throughput with the intended design. Repair a missing network dependency before changing SMB settings.
Before changing production
Do not infer application speed from aggregate NIC link rates or enable unsupported network combinations.
