Investigate a DFS namespace pointing users at an unavailable target
A DFS path can resolve to a target that is offline or inappropriate for the user's site. Inspect namespace folder targets.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Get-DfsnFolderTarget -Path '\\corp.example.com\Files\Department'
Read the result
With DFS Namespace tools, the command lists configured targets and their state for the example folder. Client referral caches and site-cost decisions need separate checks.
Resolve and verify
Compare intended target health, replication status and client referral behavior. Correct the managed target state and verify a new access attempt from the affected site.
Before changing production
Do not delete namespace targets or redirect users to an unsynchronized replica without assessing data consistency.
