Windows Server / File Services, Storage & Backup
Find a folder quota that blocks writes despite free disk space
A file server can have plenty of volume capacity while a department folder reaches its FSRM quota. Check the applicable path policy.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Get-FsrmQuota -Path 'D:\Shares\Department'
Read the result
With the FSRM module, the query describes the selected folder quota. Parent auto-applied policies and soft versus hard enforcement require interpretation.
Resolve and verify
Compare the quota and actual usage with the approved allocation and growth pattern. Adjust the specific quota only after capacity and retention review.
Before changing production
Do not remove all quotas or delete user data without its owner's approved lifecycle process.
