Windows Server / File Services, Storage & Backup
Diagnose a file type rejected by Windows File Server Resource Manager
A write can be blocked by file-screening policy rather than ordinary permissions. Check the policy on the affected directory.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Get-FsrmFileScreen -Path 'D:\Shares\Department'
Read the result
The command lists file-screen configuration for the path when present. Exceptions and inherited policy also affect enforcement.
Resolve and verify
Compare the exact rejected filename with the intended business policy and FSRM event evidence. Request a narrow approved exception only when justified.
Before changing production
Do not rename prohibited content to evade a file screen or disable screening across the whole share.
