Collect SSH server authentication evidence from the correct unit
A client-side permission-denied message can represent several server-side policies. Correlate the actual server event and account.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
journalctl -u sshd --since '30 minutes ago' --no-pager -n 100
Read the result
On distributions using sshd.service, this reads a bounded log window. Ubuntu commonly uses ssh.service; choose the actual unit and retention source.
Resolve and verify
Match the client time and source with account state, key selection and authentication policy. Repair the verified identity or policy dependency and test a new authorized connection.
Before changing production
Do not enable password login or root access broadly as a shortcut, and redact private account and host details.
