Diagnose Linux time synchronization through actual chrony sources
A running time daemon can remain unsynchronized or follow an unsuitable source. Inspect tracking and source selection.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
chronyc tracking
chronyc sources -v
Read the result
On a chrony-managed server, these report synchronization context and visible source status. Reachability, offsets and selection marks require the tool's documented interpretation.
Resolve and verify
Compare sources with the approved time design, then repair network or configuration faults. Verify stable synchronization before retesting certificate or authentication failures.
Before changing production
Do not manually step production clocks or point every server at an arbitrary public peer.
