Investigate an NFS client hang through mount policy and server reachability
A process accessing a stalled NFS mount can wait even while the host otherwise appears healthy. Inspect the real mount options.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
findmnt -t nfs,nfs4 -o TARGET,SOURCE,FSTYPE,OPTIONS
Read the result
The list identifies NFS mounts and their retry or protocol-related configuration. It does not establish whether the server or network caused the stall.
Resolve and verify
Correlate the affected export with server health, network path and kernel messages. Restore the dependency and choose any timeout-policy change with application data-safety requirements in mind.
Before changing production
Do not switch to soft mounts or force unmounts merely to clear a hang without assessing write consistency.
