Linux Server / Filesystems, LVM & Recovery
Separate a Linux SMB mount's credentials from filesystem ownership mapping
A mounted CIFS share can show unexpected owners or deny operations because client mapping and server authorization differ.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
findmnt -t cifs -o TARGET,SOURCE,OPTIONS
Read the result
The query shows current CIFS mount configuration. It does not expose the complete server-side effective permissions or prove the intended account authenticated.
Resolve and verify
Compare the credential source, UID/GID mapping and server share or NTFS rights. Correct only the verified managed layer and validate a representative read or write.
Before changing production
Do not put passwords directly in fstab or make all files writable to bypass an identity mismatch.
