Linux Server / Security, Updates & Automation

Check a specific RPM package's installed-file changes

A server executable or configuration can differ from its package metadata after a local change or damage. Verify the relevant package first.

Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.

Start with this check

Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.

rpm -V openssh-server

Read the result

On an RPM-based host, verification compares selected installed-file attributes with package records. Configuration changes can be legitimate and output needs field-specific interpretation.

Resolve and verify

Compare unexpected differences with approved changes, package provenance and security evidence. Restore through the supported package or incident-response process as appropriate.

Before changing production

Do not assume every changed configuration is malicious or overwrite locally managed policy without review.
