Windows Server / Hyper-V & Failover Clustering
Separate virtual-disk size from host free space and guest partitions
A dynamically expanding VHDX can fail writes when host storage fills even if the guest sees free logical capacity.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Get-VHD -Path 'D:\VMs\APP01\disk.vhdx' | Select-Object Path, VhdType, Size, FileSize, MinimumSize
Read the result
Size is virtual capacity while FileSize describes the host file allocation. Neither reports all free space in the backing storage or the guest filesystem.
Resolve and verify
Check host volume headroom, checkpoints and the guest partition layout. Plan supported growth or cleanup at the correct layer and validate writes.
Before changing production
Do not compact, shrink or resize an active disk without following the supported workflow and protecting the data.
