Check checkpoint mode when application-consistent VM backup fails
A backup workflow can depend on guest integration and production-checkpoint support. Inspect the intended mode and guest integration state.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Get-VM -Name 'APP01' | Select-Object Name, CheckpointType
Get-VMIntegrationService -VMName 'APP01'
Read the result
The first result reports configured checkpoint behavior; the integration list provides host-side component status. Neither proves a particular backup was application-consistent.
Resolve and verify
Compare the failing backup's exact error with guest VSS or filesystem-freeze evidence. Repair the supported integration path and verify a restore test.
Before changing production
Do not silently fall back to crash-consistent recovery if the application requires application-consistent backups.
