Windows Server / Hyper-V & Failover Clustering
Investigate checkpoint accumulation before deleting storage
Unexpected checkpoint growth can consume host capacity and delay merges. Inventory checkpoints and understand which component created them.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Get-VMSnapshot -VMName 'APP01'
Read the result
The command lists visible checkpoints, not every possible orphan or backup artifact. Compare the VM's current disk chain and backup job state.
Resolve and verify
Coordinate with the backup and VM owners to remove only approved checkpoints through Hyper-V management, then monitor merge progress and storage headroom.
Before changing production
A checkpoint is not a replacement for an independent backup. Do not delete checkpoint files through File Explorer.
