PLC / Process Control & PID Troubleshooting
Confirm PID process-variable and setpoint units before tuning
A loop can behave badly because its measurement, setpoint and controller range represent different engineering quantities.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Compare approved units, scaling and limits for the process variable, setpoint, controller output and receiving device.
Interpret the evidence
A plausible displayed value does not prove consistent normalization. Tuning constants can also depend on the controller's unit conventions.
Resolve and verify
Correct the demonstrated unit or range mismatch through the controls and process owners, then validate the loop under the approved operating and test plan.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not tune around an unverified scaling defect or change protective thresholds to match a mistaken display.
