PLC / Process Control & PID Troubleshooting
Investigate a PID loop that drives away from its setpoint
Incorrect action direction is one possible cause, but a reversed actuator or measurement interpretation can produce similar behavior.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Review the documented process response, controller action convention and approved command-to-feedback mapping using existing records.
Interpret the evidence
Direct and reverse terminology is not identical across every implementation. A positive output change can have different physical effects on different processes.
Resolve and verify
Have the process and controls owners reconcile the complete loop sign and qualify any correction in an isolated or controlled test environment.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not reverse action experimentally on a live hazardous process or use output forcing to discover the process sign.
