PLC / Process Control & PID Troubleshooting
Investigate a PID output jump during manual-to-auto transfer
An abrupt transition can occur when internal state, tracking or setpoint does not match the current manual operating point.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Compare recorded manual output, process value, setpoint and documented tracking or initialization behavior before the transfer.
Interpret the evidence
Bumpless-transfer support and required inputs vary by controller block. Merely copying a manual value to one tag may not align internal state.
Resolve and verify
Implement the manufacturer's supported transfer design and qualify entry, exit and restart cases with the process owner before deployment.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not repeatedly switch a live process between modes to find a setting that seems smooth.
