A calculation can exceed its intermediate or destination datatype even when the final intended engineering value seems small.

Observe and record
Record operand types, intermediate expression types, conversion points and the documented range of each stage using the approved source.
Interpret the evidence
Implicit promotion, signedness and overflow behavior are implementation-specific. Assigning the final result to a wider type may not fix an earlier overflow.
Resolve and verify
Use a correctly typed, bounded calculation and validate extreme and invalid inputs in the supported test environment.
