PLC / PLC Programming, Timing & State Logic
Explain PLC floating-point comparisons that do not match operator expectations
A displayed rounded value can look equal to a threshold while its stored value differs. Representation and units affect the result.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Review datatype, calculation stages, display formatting and the exact decision condition using approved offline analysis.
Interpret the evidence
Decimal display precision is not the same as stored precision. Exact equality can be inappropriate for a measured or calculated quantity.
Resolve and verify
Define the required engineering tolerance, hysteresis or datatype strategy with the process owner and validate representative boundary values.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not alter protective thresholds simply to match a rounded HMI display.
