PLC / Industrial Networks & PLC Communications
Investigate a PLC communication fault caused by duplicate IP addressing
Intermittent access can occur when two devices use the same address, but similar symptoms also arise from link or routing faults.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Compare approved network inventory, switch or controller duplicate-address diagnostics and existing passive observations with event timestamps.
Interpret the evidence
A responding address does not prove it is the intended controller. Cached neighbor information and changing responders can complicate diagnosis.
Resolve and verify
Have the OT network owner identify the conflicting devices and implement the approved unique-address plan, then validate all dependent connections.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not change PLC addresses, run broad active scans or disconnect production network cables without coordinated approval.
