Oracle Database / RMAN Backup & Recovery
Find the first RMAN job failure rather than the final summary
A wrapper may report only that a backup failed. Database job history helps identify the affected session and time interval.
Environment and inputs: Oracle Database 19c baseline · SQL*Plus-compatible SQL unless RMAN, DGMGRL, ADRCI or a host shell is specified. Check release, patch level, edition and container first.
Start with this diagnostic
Use the stated SQL, RMAN, DGMGRL or host shell and replace sample names with approved targets. DBA and V$ views need authorized catalog access in the correct container. Do not grant broad privileges for an example.
SELECT session_key, input_type, status, start_time, end_time FROM v$rman_backup_job_details ORDER BY start_time DESC FETCH FIRST 20 ROWS ONLY;
Read the result
The rows summarize backup job activity retained by the control file. A completed status must still be matched to the intended scope and recovery objective.
Resolve and verify
Open the corresponding RMAN output and find the first substantive error with its lower-level details. Route storage and media failures to their owners.
Operational precautions
Do not treat a final RMAN summary line as the root cause or assume history is retained indefinitely.
