Oracle Database / RMAN Backup & Recovery
ORA-19815: respond to an almost-full recovery area before an outage
A recovery-area warning is an opportunity to prevent archiving and backup disruption. Check current usage and growth rather than ignoring the message.
Environment and inputs: Oracle Database 19c baseline · SQL*Plus-compatible SQL unless RMAN, DGMGRL, ADRCI or a host shell is specified. Check release, patch level, edition and container first.
Start with this diagnostic
Use the stated SQL, RMAN, DGMGRL or host shell and replace sample names with approved targets. DBA and V$ views need authorized catalog access in the correct container. Do not grant broad privileges for an example.
SELECT file_type, percent_space_used, percent_space_reclaimable, number_of_files FROM v$recovery_area_usage;
Read the result
The breakdown helps identify archived logs, backup pieces or flashback data consuming the area. Percentages relate to the configured recovery-area limit.
Resolve and verify
Review retention requirements and file-type growth, then add justified capacity or perform approved managed cleanup. Confirm that archiving and backup jobs continue normally.
Operational precautions
Do not sacrifice required recovery points or standby redo dependencies to clear a warning.
