ORA-00257: investigate the archiver error behind restricted logins
An archiver failure can block ordinary connections to protect recovery consistency. The first task is to identify the failing destination and its error.
Environment and inputs: Oracle Database 19c baseline · SQL*Plus-compatible SQL unless RMAN, DGMGRL, ADRCI or a host shell is specified. Check release, patch level, edition and container first.
Start with this diagnostic
Use the stated SQL, RMAN, DGMGRL or host shell and replace sample names with approved targets. DBA and V$ views need authorized catalog access in the correct container. Do not grant broad privileges for an example.
SELECT dest_id, status, destination, error FROM v$archive_dest WHERE status <> 'INACTIVE';
Read the result
Destination errors help distinguish capacity, network and configuration problems. An optional remote destination differs from a required local or mandatory path.
Resolve and verify
Correlate the alert log, destination state and FRA accounting. Repair storage or transport and confirm archiving progresses before reopening normal application traffic.
Operational precautions
Do not disable required archiving or manually remove archived logs without checking backup and standby recovery needs.
