ORA-01722: find an unintended numeric conversion
Character data compared with a number can trigger conversion errors when a nonnumeric value is encountered. Inspect datatypes before changing session formatting.
Environment and inputs: Oracle Database 19c baseline · SQL*Plus-compatible SQL unless RMAN, DGMGRL, ADRCI or a host shell is specified. Check release, patch level, edition and container first.
Start with this diagnostic
Use the stated SQL, RMAN, DGMGRL or host shell and replace sample names with approved targets. DBA and V$ views need authorized catalog access in the correct container. Do not grant broad privileges for an example.
SELECT column_name, data_type FROM all_tab_columns WHERE owner = 'APP_OWNER' AND table_name = 'APP_ORDERS';
Read the result
The metadata helps reveal mismatched types. Evaluation order can change with a different execution plan, exposing a conversion that previously appeared to work.
Resolve and verify
Align bind and column datatypes and use explicit validated conversion where the business rule requires it. Test bad input as well as normal data.
Operational precautions
Do not rely on predicate order to protect an unsafe conversion. Confirm the exact failing expression before editing stored data.
