Oracle Database / SQL & PL/SQL Errors
ORA-01400: trace a NULL reaching a required column
An insert can omit a required value or obtain NULL through a trigger or application transformation. Identify the named column in the complete error.
Environment and inputs: Oracle Database 19c baseline · SQL*Plus-compatible SQL unless RMAN, DGMGRL, ADRCI or a host shell is specified. Check release, patch level, edition and container first.
Start with this diagnostic
Use the stated SQL, RMAN, DGMGRL or host shell and replace sample names with approved targets. DBA and V$ views need authorized catalog access in the correct container. Do not grant broad privileges for an example.
SELECT column_name, nullable, data_default FROM all_tab_columns WHERE owner = 'APP_OWNER' AND table_name = 'APP_ORDERS';
Read the result
The metadata identifies required columns and defaults. A default does not universally replace an explicitly supplied NULL.
Resolve and verify
Trace the insert mapping, bind presence and relevant trigger logic. Supply the real business value or correct the approved default design, then test missing-input cases.
Operational precautions
Do not relax NOT NULL or insert a made-up placeholder without a data-model decision.
