ORA-01113: determine why a datafile requires media recovery
A restored or inconsistent file may need redo application before it can be used. Establish the file and database recovery state.
Environment and inputs: Oracle Database 19c baseline · SQL*Plus-compatible SQL unless RMAN, DGMGRL, ADRCI or a host shell is specified. Check release, patch level, edition and container first.
Start with this diagnostic
Use the stated SQL, RMAN, DGMGRL or host shell and replace sample names with approved targets. DBA and V$ views need authorized catalog access in the correct container. Do not grant broad privileges for an example.
SELECT file#, online_status, error, change#, time FROM v$recover_file;
Read the result
Rows identify files reported as needing recovery. The view's usefulness depends on control-file state and does not replace header and backup analysis.
Resolve and verify
Have the recovery DBA validate file headers, backup lineage and required redo, then use the appropriate supported recovery procedure and verify the data afterward.
Operational precautions
Do not open RESETLOGS or offline files merely to bypass the message. Recovery decisions can change the recoverable data boundary.
