Incident event ordering with uncertain device clocks
A router log seems to precede the application error by seconds, but the devices have different clock offsets. The apparent order may be an artifact of unsynchronized time.
Environment and inputs: Network and infrastructure observability; Prometheus examples describe metric semantics rather than a universal exporter schema. Diagnostic/design example; not tested on production equipment.
Collect the evidence
Collect time-source status, offset estimates, timestamp precision and collection delay. Distinguish event time from ingestion time and preserve monotonic sequence information where available.
Explain the result
Causal ordering cannot be inferred confidently from wall-clock timestamps whose uncertainty overlaps. Centralized ingestion adds another delay that can differ across sources.
Plan the fix
Build the timeline with explicit uncertainty and independent causal evidence such as sequence changes or same-point packet observations. Repair time synchronization without rewriting the original incident records.
Check the result and rollback
Generate a controlled event visible in several systems and compare timing bounds. Revise the narrative if the data cannot establish which component changed first.
